Whatâs going on at University Drive and Research Park Boulevard in Huntsville?
The Alabama Department of Transportation and the city of Huntsville are working to change signals and striping to improve traffic flow at a busy Huntsville interchange.
Work begins Monday (Nov. 6) at the U.S. 72/University Drive and Alabama 255/Research Park Boulevard interchange.
ALDOT warns commuters will be affected. Drivers can expect lane closures and narrowed lanes and are asked to reduce their speed in the work area.
If weather cooperates, crews will be busy about three days, according to a news release from Seth Burkett of ALDOT’s North Region.
What will happen? According to the release:
- ALDOT crews will change striping to reconfigure the left turn lanes from U.S. 72 to Alabama 255 and modify striping on the ramps to Alabama 255.
- The turn lanes will be reduced to a single, offset turn lane for eastbound-to-northbound traffic and a single, offset turn lane for westbound-to-southbound traffic.
- City of Huntsville crews will install new signals with flashing yellow arrows. In addition to protected left turns during the green arrow indication, these signals will allow left turns after yielding to oncoming traffic when the yellow arrow is flashing.
